Hi IQ Users !

Well, well, v108 was supposed to be a minor update to v107, basically adding support for Calendar repeating events.

As it turned out, from one thing to another, just about every aspect of IQ was worked on.
The Calendar of course, but also Workspace tabs, numerous aspects of grids (filtering, hoist, drag-drop, columns), Gantt charts, Universal links, Toolbars and Dashboards.

Lots of usability improvements too. Things that required many steps can now be done in much fewer steps, sometimes a single click.
And when in doubt, more and more dialogs have an F1 button (bottom left of the window). Click it or press F1 to open the relevant page in the user manual.

Newcomers also now have a central place for hands-on help and documentation: the Welcome to InfoQube command which opens up a system-provided and managed IQBase designed to help them get going.

So here we are, 3 months later and v108 is now finally online:
  1. New: Welcome to InfoQube command and IQBase: The Welcome IQBase is a system provided and managed IQBase designed to help users learn how to use InfoQube
  2. New: Workspace: New Tab button, to create new grids or open existing ones
  3. New: Calendar: View and Edit Google Calendar Repeating events
  4. New: Calendar: The Today button on the date toolbar is now checked when the today's date is shown somewhere on the Calendar
  5. New: Grid: Filter by Selection. Select one of more cells to show only items with these cell values. Works with Wikitags too ! Grid column filters now work in a very similar fashion as Hoist filters
  6. New: Grid: Add Column command: Button to create New Fields (on the fly, without going to the Field Properties dialog)
  7. New: Grid: Improved drag / drop (UI and speed). This makes IQ a viable option for Kanban-style information management (i.e. Trello-like)
  8. New: Grid: Right-click on an empty area of the grid shows the workspace tab context menu
  9. New: Grid: Hoist Special now has a checkbox to show the hoist in a new tab
  10. New: Grid: Hoist commands: Hold Shift or Ctrl to show the Hoist in a new tab
  11. New: Grid: When selecting a grid in the grid list or the recent grid list, hold Shift or Ctrl to open the grid in a new tab
  12. New: Gantt: Overview pane enhancements: 1- Resizable, 2- Shows visible date range, 3-Option to show/hide bars
  13. New: Gantt: Show Critical Path. Shows in red the tasks that determine the project completion date. When showing the Critical path it is now also possible to:
    • Refresh the Critical Path, after a change to the tasks for example
    • Optimize the schedule. Compress the tasks based on task links and delays to find the earliest completion
    • Save the optimized schedule as the current baseline, or turn off the Critical Path to return to the current baseline
  14. New: Gantt: Dropdown menu command to select the Auto-Scroll setting: None, Bar start, Bar end. Scrolling through Gantt tasks now offers better control over bar visibility
  15. New: Gantt: When the focus is on the Gantt, the left / right arrows now provide more information by:
    • Vertical colored line showing the date
    • Left / Right keys move the focus to the previous / next date of interest
    • All tasks that start or end on that date are highlighted (selected)
    • Use Ctrl + Shift + M (to mark) or Ctrl + C to copy these for easy referencing
  16. New: Gantt: Link color is now the same as the originating bar
  17. New: Gantt: When creating links between tasks, option to not show the dialog
  18. New: Gantt: Double-click on a link to open the link properties dialog
  19. New: Gantt: Improved Link dialog
  20. New: Dashboards: Right-click on the pane title bar shows the workspace tab context menu
  21. New: Dialog UI uniformisation in progress. Support for user selectable font size. "F1" button and function key support to open the online help page
  22. New: Format toolbar now has a
  23. New: Support for universal links to other apps (using URI protocol, such as Onenote://, ct://, epim://, etc)
  24. New: Support for universal links to IQ items and views (IQ:// hyperlink protocol)
    • Format: IQ://C:\SomeIQBase.sndb/items/ItemID, or:
      • /items/ItemID1,ItemID2, (...)
      • /views/Surface
      • /views/Calendar

      • If the IQBase is already opened, link will switch to it, even if the actual link path is incorrect, as long at it is the same file name
    • Use Edit > Copy > Copy Item URIs to put a link to the selected items in the clipboard
    • Use Copy View to put a link to the view in the clipboard
  25. New: IQURIProtocolInstall.exe program to setup and register the IQ:// protocol
  26. New: Edit > Copy > Item URIs
  27. New: Properties pane: Item lists are now editable (Parents, Siblings, Children, Marked items)

  33. Fixed: Grid: Item > Split did not properly assign parents to the created items
  34. Fixed: Grid: Alt -> does not assign main parent
  35. Fixed: Grid: on column filter by selection, re-select the items after applying the filter

Can't get the URI to work -- chrome starts up each time when I click on an hyperling created with the URI.
I'm probably missing a step. Will check it out tomorrow.

Yes, I did.
(At first I didn't, and Windows complained. Then I did, and now Chrome starts instead of IQ.)

It doesn,t work, but I suspect it's a problem on my side : URIs to Word documents don't work either
e.g. <a href=ms-word:ofe|u|file:///E:\Desktop\Bio_Murgia.docx>Test</a>

Open Regedit.exe and check that the following key was properly created:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IQ
  • DefaultIcon
  • Shell
    • Open
      • Command
        • (Default) : "IQMainFolderPath\infoqubeclipper.exe" /select %1

OK, that was it. Now it works!
I should've checked that.
(Had to replace IQMainFolderPath with my own path though. Was that what you had in mind?)

I'm really happy about that URI stuff.

No, it should be automatic. I found a small bug in the protocol installer. I'll release an update later on today

The registry key template seems to contain a syntax error:

That doesn't work:

@="\"{IQCLIPPERPATH}\\infoqubeclipper.exe\" /select \%1\"

That works (removing the backslashes around %1):

@="\"{IQCLIPPERPATH}\\infoqubeclipper.exe\" /select %1"

In v108Pre1 list, maybe put

New: IQURIProtocolInstall.exe program to setup and register the IQ:// protocol

before the URI description, or maybe say that it needs to be activated.

New: Properties pane: Item lists are now editable (Parents, Siblings, Children, Marked items)
I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by this. Parents, children, etc... fields are still read-only.

I tried editing both in properties, grid, etc... Still can't.

Anyways, I was hoping when syncing with external db, I would be able to map parents. If its not too much work for you, could you add ability to do this in next release?

Thanks!

Hi All !

I've fixed an issue with the IQ protocol install program. Users interested in using universal links should re-download v108Pre1 and run IQURIProtocolInstall.exe

Very happy about that!!!

Filter by selection should be practical. Thanks. I changed the shortcut though so that it behave as it was -- at least in my setup : Ctrl+Shift+Alt+G to activate/deactivate the filter column instead of applying the "filter selection" option.

v108Pre4 is now online:
  • New: Field properties dialog now has a minimize button. It is now possible to leave the window open. The window is shown on the taskbar
  • Fixed: Grid: on column filter by selection, re-select the items after applying the filter
  • Fixed: Map View: Text format was not applied to existing text

Have been experimenting with IQ:// universal links.  Made desktop shortcuts containing links to a specific IQ item.  When I double-click the link, I think it would be good if Windows switched to IQ automatically; right now I have to activate the IQ window to see the item.

Also, I think it would be good to be able to specify, in the link, the grid or view in which the linked-to item will be shown - e.g. in a named grid or a scratch grid.  Also in the case of a sub-item would be good to specify, in the link, that the item should be shown hoisted.

Hi Jim,

What application are you using ? I created a hyperlink in MS Word, Ctrl + Clicked the link and the IQ window came up in focus

As for showing the item in a specific grid, it uses the item Home for that. Can you check if your linked item has a Home ?

Here, it opens the correct grid and focuses on the correct item, as it should.

The target item didn't have a home grid, so I set a home grid for it.

Then I tried opening three different URI links to the item:
1.  hyperlink in MS Word 2007.  It popped up a "potential security concern" message box, but I doubt that you would have any control over that.
2.  URI link in Notepad++.
3.  a desktop shortcut (URL file) created using New > Shortcut.

None of these methods will bring up the Infoqube window for me.  But when I switch manually to the Infoqube window, the Home Grid comes up with the focus on the linked item.

I am running the Portable Version of IQ.  I didn't have a default program for SNDB files properly set (and that is hard to do in Windows 10), but I finally set it to the IQ 108Pre5.  Still that didn't help.

I thought it might be a problem with this particular PC, so I went to another PC.  Same results there.

One other possible factor, I keep my IQ portable program files in a Dropbox folder, so that when I copied the latest version to that folder on one computer, it gets copied to my other computers.

Confirmed with the desktop shortcut. I'll be able to fix it. I suspect it is due to the nature of the double-click (vs a single click)

Same here, in general... unless IQ needs to load a new grid to display the item(s).
When a new grid is loaded to display the items, IQ's window comes to the front.

[quote]New: Grid: Hoist Special now has a checkbox to show the hoist in a new tab

There's a "conflict" between this useful feature and using keyboard shortcuts for hoisting -- it,s now a bit more difficult to hoist in the same grid.

Most shortcuts are created with combinations of shift/alt/ctrl/win (+ some other key/symbol) and because shift/ctrl now trigger "hoist in a new tab" I'm now always hoisting in a new tab (... since my hoist shortcuts all involve shift & ctrl).

Could shift/ctrl only be active when the user clicks on a hoist button, and not while using keyboard shortcuts to activate/deactivate the various hoist commands?

Thanks!

 Pierre --

OUTSTANDING ---  Thank you very much!  I haven't reviewed the details of the prior discussion but the only thing that jumps out at me that you were apparently not able to implement was some kind of button over the "column" area that would make it intuitive and easy to add columns.  But since I know my way around a little, I easily figured that out too.

I presume you will want to make an announcement over at the Outliner forum at some point yourself, so I will wait for you to post there before i make a comment.  However I feel sure that those guys will be thrilled.  No one should have ANY issue with how to get started.  Hit the + key for a new tab, start typing -- the tab and shift tab to indent work as expected, the font controls are easily at hand, and your outline-based icons are also right there.

Again THANK you for these usability changes.   I own the latest version of Rightnote and Myinfo and even a cursory glance at IQ 0.9.108 makes clear that it can do way more than they can (and I am just talking core outlining/research text gathering, not even mentioning the calendar and other features).

I still would like to see you do something to advertise - with a screenshot that shows columns in use on the outline - and specifically show that the column can themselves contain word-wrapped text with FONTS and bolds etc within the COLUMNS!- WOW that is a feature that nobody else can match!   You have not just one but THREE fully rich-text panels to warm an outliner's heart - the main outline, the columns, and the full HTML pane.  Most of the others really only have one! My beloved Ecco only has one!  You have three!  Hooray!!!!

I am limited mainly to the windows world, but as far as I know NOBODY CAN TOUCH THAT ANYWHERE --- and I will be stunned if the Outlining gang doesn't recognize the superiority of what you have to offer, and what it allows them to do.

Thanks again - and I will get to work with more experimenting.

The additions for new users -- and for more experienced ones alike -- are great!
I won't go through each one, one by one, but what I've seen is really helpful.
Adding and making visible small things like add column "on the fly", add a new grid, etc. was a necessary move.

Calendar question:
Is the syncing now fully functional? I haven,t been using it recently, but if it's fully functional, I might give it a try.

As far as I know, yes, it is functional for regular and repeating events. You can modify and delete events.
You just can't create events in IQ and have them shown in the Google Calendar

OK, so it's stll only one way : Google to IQ. (Unless I'm misunderstanding something)

OK. So that's the nuance. Thanks!

FYI, setting item text fore color with menu commands sets the ItemColor field instead of the ItemForeColor field in this build.

Hi IQUsers !

v108a is now online with the following fixes:
  • New: Fast Search: Now supports Select All (Ctrl + A) and Mark Items (Ctrl + Shift + M) commands
  • Fixed: Grid and field names are now checked that they start with a letter (not a number)
  • Fixed: Grid: Creating a hyperlink for the whole item text (WYSIWYG editor) did not work correctly
  • Fixed: Color button dropdown commands were not always working correctly
  • Fixed: Fast Search: It was not longer possible to edit item information in the Properties and HTML pane
  • Fixed: Fast Search. Properties and HTML panes were not synced
  • Fixed: User color dropdowns were showing only color name, not the color icon
HTH !

This will be the last version a few weeks, as I'll be cycling the beautiful country roads of Italy...
(well, perhaps enjoying a few days at the beach too !!)

Good to know you didn't decide to buy a house there and suddenly resolved to live an "unplugged" life from now on.
