The Calendar Today button is the same as the one from the Date Filter toolbar, and you can customize that button and add a keyboard shortcut

Wow, thanks for pointing out that possibility! However, I seem to have encountered a bug trying to go through with it. When the "Shortcut" field in the right-click context menu for customizing the 'today' toolbar button has focus, I can not enter any key combinations with modifiers, i.e. I can only enter 't' or 'T' but not Shift-Ctrl-t or anything like that involving Alt or Ctrl...

I think I'm doing it the way it's meant to be done, but for the life of me, I can't get any modifiers to be added to the shortcut for this or any button I try to customize. The field will only accept unmodified keys or capital letters...

You can add the shortcut via the other dialogue though:
 
 
in the category drop-down list choose date-filter etc

Another flagrant case of RTFM then! Very sorry, my apologies.
 
Got it to work now, but the keyboard shortcut has no effect unless focus is on the calendar pane. I can AHK-script around that though, so no big deal. If focus could stay in the grid while the calendar was still reset to today's date, I guess it would be more usable.
