I made a job list. lengthy and detailed.

Lost it somewhere in InfoQube.

Looked but couldn't find it. Tried advanced search and located individual items but I can'r see any way to show the parent of that item or where it is so search not useful.

Ended up putting in • (bullet) to advanced search and got my list back in the search. Lucky I bulleted the list.

There has to be a way to find my list? Yes I'm a newbie so I am sure I'm missing some simple thing.

I'll try to help you

Your job list was a single item or multiple items ?
Where was this job list created (new item dialog, a grid, etc)
View > History shows recently viewed items
Also, the default setup includes a Journal grid. Do you have a grid with that name. If yes, you can use the Date Filter to view items created by date (regardless where they were created). If not we can create a new Journal grid

1) Select the Item

2) Properties pane>Parents

3) Double-click parent to open it in its grid and display all its sub-items (presumably this would include the other items in your list).

Here's the situation.

I can (advanced) search and find the list (15 items) so that's good and it proves the list is in there somewhere.

BUT...

When I select any of these items the properties window for that item shows parents = 0 and it reports the item is only in the search grid.

It's a mystery as to where it is.

Any advice is most welcome.

Using the search grid, you can simply drag these items to another grid as top level items or under a parent
In the Properties pane, Basic > Home shows where the item was created. If it isn't there anymore, it would be a good place to put these items back
The Journal grid is the fastest and easiest method to get to these item (with the little information that is provided)

Thanks very much for the help. Please don't worry too much about this. I have the list in the search window so that's a start.

Obviously I'm just too new to this system to be able to use the tools. I can't even begin to understand the Journal and how to filter it.

I'll continue to study what you have said and see if I can make head way.

I think it's helpful to understand how items are shown in grids/views (I'll say grid from now on).

A grid is a filter which shows the items that 'fit' that filter. If you create a new grid, and call it, say, Notes -- a 'tick-box' field called Notes is created. Any item with that field ticked will show in the Notes grid. Also, any sub-items of those items will display in that grid.

Fields are shown in the 'Properties pane' -- top section of same shows the fields that are filled for the current item. Below that, all fields are shown (may have to be expanded). Fields can be shown as columns in the grid.

The Journal grid is unusual in that it shows *all* items. A date filter toolbar automatically displays -- you can set the year, month, day, before/after, last week, etc. (mess around with it, if you cant figure it out, have a look in the manual).

IQ can show 'dual-pane' grids -- open two grids, right-click one and select "New vertical tab group". You can now drag and drop items between grids. Pressing Ctrl key when dragging will ensure the item is shown in both grids, as opposed to simply moved.

Just to show you how abysmally slow I am I followed your advice on opening 'dual-pane' grids. Works great and so useful.

Of course now I have no way of closing the 2nd pane so I have have to close the tab and and re open it.

hi Max,

I use dual-pane constantly myself. You can drag a grid-tab from one pane to the other -- if it's the only tab in that pane, I presume the pane will then close.

Have you been able to get the items from search (or journal) into a grid? I read what you wrote below about all items -- it's hard for us to say what's going on without a screenshot, so probably best sticking with search for the moment to help recover the items.

Close the tab, and that 2nd pane will close. (click the X by where the name of your grid is showing)

I'm trying to find an older forum post, where someone explained the user interface extremely well with text and pictures, to help recognize a grid, a tab, a tab group, etc.

It needs to go in the manual eventually. I still get confused with the terminology.

(edit) here it is: terminology - Workspace, Tab Group, Tab, Pane, View (Pierre, can this terminology/screenshots be added to the manual eventually?)

You can make a grid which contains every item in the database by leaving the 'source' field blank (mine is called 'All'). Your job list would be in this grid somewhere you just have to scroll or search, then once you find it you can set the flags to make sure it appears in a grid of your choosing.

Boy wish I could do that. Of course I can't because I don't understand what you mean by 'source' field blank. <another Sigh>

Ok maybe I got it by choosing <all items> which I did - it said I had 10,985 items - shown them all - I said yes and then NOTHING just got a blank grid. Wait but nothing happened. closed and opened nothing just a blank grid.

There's no need to create a new grid with a blank source because it has already been done for you. Just open the "Journal" grid (Tools>Manage Grids).

But I'll give you the steps for doing it yourself just so you can understand it better.

1) Create a new grid (or use an existing grid that you want to use to display all items in your database)

2) Tools>Manage Grids

3) Select the grid in the list on the left (if it's not already selected)

4) On the right side, find "Source" (listed under "Data"). In most cases, this will show the same field name as the grid name.

5) Delete this entry, leaving the source field blank (or, open the drop-down list and pick "All").

6) Click "Save" and return to your grid.

6) Refresh the grid (View>Refresh)

7) If a dialogue pops up, pick "Load all items"

This will display every item in your database. It may take a while to load if you have a large database. I just loaded 14,000 items with no problem.

You can now find your missing items in this grid using the column filter (ctrl-shift-G).

Indeed... but it is more convenient to use the Date Filter to split this long list of items into more manageable chunks !

Yeah, I need to check that out. I don't really load 14k items habitually. I just did it to make sure what I wrote out would work for Maxbear.
