Showing the field when you double-click on it in Properties

Submitted by DavidF on 2016/06/07 08:52
hi,

being able to double-click on a field in the Properties Pane to get a view (in Scratch or wherever) of all the items with values for it is incredibly useful. I think what would make it even more useful would be if that also automatically added that column to the grid that opens up (by default it seems to be Scratch). After all, that is what you want to see - the values for that field (in my case it's often because I look at a field I created and wonder, What was that for??)

Of course it's relatively quick to add the column yourself - it just seems like it would be a natural part of the operation to automatically include it.

On SQL, IQ and usability

Submitted by DavidF on 2016/06/04 07:44
This post started off as a question in "How Do I?", then while writing it I found out the answer, but I figured I might still post something here, as it set off some thoughts as a new (and largely contented) user of IQ.

Something I'd puzzled over off and on for a while was how to set a criterion that shows all items where a checkbox is not checked. So, either in the Grid Source or in the Filter, I had tried:

  • Is Not [check_box]
  • Not [check_box]
  • <> [check_box]
  • [check_box] = 0
  • [check_box] <> -1

These all got no results. What surprised me was that although [check_box] = 0 didn't return anything, [check_box] = -1 returned the items that are checked.

  • InfoQube supports Rich-text formatting for grids, items and the HTML editing pane.
  • Editing in the HTML pane is similar to word-processors. See 4. Document Pane.
  • In grids, formatting is structured as a hierarchy. In increasing order of precedence, these are:

Automatically Assign Field Value to ALL Items (upon item creation)

Submitted by David_H on 2016/06/02 19:46
In the Properties Field, there is an option for "default value".  Could an option be added if the user wants the default value to get added to EVERY item (upon creation)?  Currently if an entry is made in the default value area, the field has to be clicked on in a column to add the default value.  Here is my a case...

I have two values I assign to every single item in my IQ database.  For instance, I have a status of open or closed for every item.  Being able to set a default of open for every new item would be immensely beneficial and help make sure I don't forget to assign a value.  It would also make it pretty much impossible to have "orphan" items....at least insofar as all items would show up in my "open grid" until assigned a value of "closed", at which point it would show up in the closed grid.

In the business software I use I am used to being able to

Copy HTML Pane along with Item

Submitted by DavidF on 2016/06/02 18:29
Would it be possible, when you copy an item from one IQ database to another, to also copy the HTML/MHT file that appears in the HTML Pane? I mean that there should be a new HTML/MHT file copied into the destination database's "files" folder.

As it is, it seems that the copied item, in the new database, still references the HTML/MHT file in the original database folder. This can become problematic if you rename or move the original database and the copied item loses the link to the content in the HTML pane.

Basically it seems to me that when you copy an item from one database to another, everything should be copied, including the associated HTML/MHT file, if any.

I can see that this would be tricky if the file appearing in the HTML Pane was an external file, eg Word or PDF. But HTML/MHT files seem to me to be integral to the item.

Please Increase Pop-Up Area Window

Tools > Field Properties > Editor > Po-Up List

Please consider making this window larger, it's so small it's very difficult to manage pop-up values in this window once you have more than a few of them.  Currently I cut and paste all the values to Notepad, modify them there, and then paste them back into IQ.  But it would be nice to just make the changes within IQ.  There is a TON of unused space there, so I'd think it should be pretty easy.

Streamlined Field Creation

Submitted by David_H on 2016/05/30 14:19
I am using yes/no fields as tags.  While not perfect, they function quite well for tagging.  The main limitation is it's not efficient to quickly create and group fields in the property pane on the fly...but could be.

Please see attached screenshot of property pane.  Using the screenshot as an example, I'd like to be able to right click on "tags what", select "create new child field" and have the parent ID populated appropriately.  Possible?

BTW, one motivator here is that dragging fields to parent fields is very cumbersome, I usually have to try it about 5 times to get it to work, is there a trick to it?  If not, is there a way to improve it?

Thanks

Making it easier to re-name hyperlinks

Submitted by WayneK on 2016/05/30 14:12
I have a couple of minor suggestions for hyperlinks:

1)  Make website hyperlink text editable as soon as you drag it into the HTML pane.  Right now, the link text is shown highlighted but you cannot edit it.  You have to click somewhere in the HTML pane, then select it again to directly edit it.  Note that in the grid, the link dialogue comes up with the text highlighted so you can immediately type in the name you want.  This may not be possible because although you've dragged the link to InfoQube, and the link is highlighted, the focus is actually still in the browser window.

2) For all links, when you open the link dialogue (Ctrl-K), bring up the dialogue with the link text highlighted so you can immediately start typing to re-name it.  Right now, you have to first manually select the text before you can change it.

These suggestions are based on the assumption that the

Uninstall Portable Version

Submitted by Metta on 2016/05/28 17:28
I recently installed the portable version of InfoQube in Dropbox, and I could find no information in the User Manual or in this forum about how to uninstall IQ. IQ also does not show up when I load RevoUninstaller, and I could find no uninstall option in my IQ folder in Dropbox. Does this mean I can simply delete the entire IQ folder from Dropbox -- without initiating any kind of uninstall process? Thanks, Metta
