Documentation

It is obvious that you (individually and as a team of interested persons) have done a lot of hard, conscientious work. I would not be surprised if my question has been asked and answered elsewhere, but I didn't find it. My apologies if this is redundant. As a new user, evaluating the product, I'm very interested in the manual. I'm one of those people that are away from their desk more often than not, and need to maximize efficiency while in front of the screen. While learning/ evaluating IQ, being able to carry a print out of the manual (or portions there of) would be a great boon. I'd be able to read & think about the various things I can/ want/ should do with IQ - while waiting for a meeting, taking a parent to the doctor, and a few Mega-other things. I realize that the product is in beta, changing fast (I downloaded the current version vs last because of the added items!), and documentation always lags (one of the reasons I'm interested in IQ).

import bugs etc.

I'm just playing at the moment, but I've come across some issues in 0.9.24H.

1) When importing, (File->Import->Import data), the first import works, the second always freezes IQ.  After a restart it will work.

2) When importing, when the file being imported is locked by another user, instead of a warning message IQ freezes.

3) In the properties pane, Forms->Grid Form, double clicking should "Show items with values for this field".  0 is a value, as is False in a Boolean field, but in both cases these are excluded when that is chosen.  It took me a while to work out where my data had "gone".  I think this either needs correcting or the explanation improved.

4) Out of interest (because, and forgive the heresy, I see IQ as a Zoot/Ultra Recall mixture), is it already possible to format items conditionally (e.g.

Performance on a netbook

Submitted by Jon on 2010/01/13 11:38
I know that Jan is running IQ on his netbook. So far, I have been running IQ on a very fast notebook and have experienced some performance issues, but this is a huge improvement from the early days.

The appeal of a netbook is the price (it can essentailly be a throw-away), and the battery life. The trade-off is performance and marginal display. I experimented with IQ running under Windows 7 Starter Edition, and found IQ to be uh, sluggish. To be fair, all of my programs take a hit when run on this netbook (with the latest Atom processor and a 250 GB hard drive), but IQ suffers the most by  far. Are there any tricks to improve this situation?

By the way, IQ on a netbook is great for taking and organizing quick notes. Leaving the netbook on standby speeds up accessibility to IQ and uses negigible battery power.

expand/collapse items using arrow keys

Submitted by ThomR on 2010/01/12 16:03
Greetings all. I tried adding right and left arrows as keyboard shortcuts for expanding/collapsing items (in addition to ctrl+,-), only to discover that this gets applied in edit mode as well, such that I'm unable to move the cursor to the right or left within the text with the arrows. I suppose there isn't a way to have arrow functionality for expand/collapse which is only applied when outside of edit mode?

Best,
Thomas

New IQ users wanted?

Submitted by sfinxx on 2010/01/09 12:02

So you'd like to have lots of new IQ users?

Seems so. At least you are very busy writing FAQ's, Tutoríals etc.

You're so busy you don't even notice that there's a new user right here in front of your nose? A new user desperately trying to get IQ to run? A new user who asked for help because of this? A new user who was told to wait for release 9.25 - without even mentioning anywhere when that's supposed to happen? The problem " could be related to Win 2000 and/or to a locale issue" - that was it.

(Quote:) "If ... I can't make substantial progress up the learning curve in the next day or two, I'll probably put IQ on the back burner for 6 months." So will I - albeit for more than 6 months.

So long guys. It's been nice to meet you.

Sure you are interested in new users?

Another copy / paste or maybe linking question (long)

Here's the situation:

My contact list is constructed of TLI names. Could be people or companies  Example:

Mitchell oil & gas company
  oil delivery
  appt to clean furnace
negotiated a winter price per gallon

Pierre
  discussed calendar functions
reserved trip to montreal as tourist & IQ lessons
  license / registration number pending

In order to keep track of my utility deliveries -- oil & gas, I created a new "utilities delivery grid" w a form which I use to add

what kind of delivery, i.e.

Couple of basic questions

Submitted by dyuhas on 2010/01/08 10:59
I found IQ via a mention by James Fallows on his blog.  It looks extremely promising.  It's also, at this point in the development cycle, extremely frustrating and confusing.  Couple of questions:

1 - Import of Evernote data does not seem to work.  Is this feature enabled?

2 - The Firefox extension does not seem to work.  Or perhaps the data is being store somewhere that is not obvious?  Is this feature enabled?
