Tagging syntax and automatically created tag grids

Submitted by lucasd on 2010/09/24 19:59
Hello all,

I'm just getting my feet on the ground with IQ (having great results so far with task management and foreign language word databases). So it may be a bit premature for me to be posting in the "Suggestions" forum, but here, for what it's worth, is my idea:

Basically, I am looking for a more efficient way to implement tagging (of word lists, for instance). So far, I've been using this method:

1. Add tags inline in the Item text in the form "@tag"
2. Create a grid with the filter "Item LIKE "*@tag*"

This works well, but given that it's probably a common sort of task, I'm wondering about automating it a bit more. My suggestion would be to have an option to turn on automatic tag processing. The user would be able to define the delimiter (e.g, "@").

A Calendar Year View anyone ?

Submitted by Pierre_Admin on 2010/09/23 03:13
Hi IQUsers,

Long time user Al has asked for this, years ago. Would anybody else also be interested in a working Calendar year view ?
  • Month columns can be individually resized
  • Focused column wordwraps
  • Scrolling with fixed header (up-down, left-right)
  • Multiple event per day, with wordwrap
  • Each event is a hyperlink.
    • Click the hyperlink would show the item info in the properties pane and the event info in the notifications pane
    • Right-click would edit the event (i.e. view the event details)
  • Event recurrence is handled correctly
  • [edit] User can select the number of months to view (as such, it may be more suitably called "linear month view" [/edit]
  • Prints in portrait or landscape mode

Grid button filter: Filter for (is not like) ?

Submitted by thorsten on 2010/09/22 04:08
Hi there,

how do I apply the grid filter syntax for the grid button filter drop down box if I want to filter for all items that do NOT match the criteria?

example:

I want to apply grid column filter to filter out all items that contain "test"

I tried:
is not "test"
not like "test"
not "test"
not test
not like test
is not test
etc.....

Thank you!

Best regards, Thorsten

Expand items & delete duplicate items

I have searched the online manual and threads and I cannot find answers for these two questions:

Pierre taught me how to update the value of a field in all items using the Property Pane. But I had to manually expand children items collapsed under parents. Clearly, I clicked on the Items menu and selected expand and when that did not work I clicked on Show all subitems, which exapnded only the children of the selected item. I then selected all of the items to see if I could expand all items in the hierarchy, but that did not work either. I had to manually go down the hierarchy and expand each subitem down through the lineage. The Property Pane will update the field value for only those items that are showing. Since I needed to update the citation filed for all items I created from researching this one book, it was quite time consuming.

Mandatory fields

Armando,

I beg your indulgence from the outset: but when is a item saved to the database?

If an item were a record in either a flat file or relational database, I could block the record from being saved until all mandatory fields had a value input into it. Can I do the same thing in IQ? I have a field called "page" the value of which should correspond to the page from the source of the item I created. I need this field to be a mandatory field because I don't want to output my grid only to find that I do not have a page for an item that does not correspond the page from the source I am outlining.

Default value of fields

I can spend hours outlining my research from one article or book. I have a citation field comprises all of the bibliographic data of the book or article I am outlinig. When I create an item, it is a pain to enter the same value in the citation field. When I create a new item, can I program IQ to use the same value for the citation field as in the previous item?

Update Query

Armando,

First, you could make a fortune if you opened up in Montreal an in-house treatment center for recovering relational databasers like me. (If you think that the relapse rate for alcoholics is high, it is not to compare for those addicted to relational databases.)

Second, as you know, you can update the value of a field in either a flat file or relational database by running an update query: after the query is run every record which has that field will be updated with the new value of the field. Can I do this with IQ?

The lead up to this issue is irrelevant. Sufficie it to say that after I started to outline and take notes on an online book, I figured out that I needed to create in IQ a citation field, which will comprise all the bibliographic data I need to cite to the book I am outlining.

0.9.25a grid rows not auto adjusting to show wrapped data

Submitted by d bartlett on 2010/09/20 09:45
having just loaded 0.9.25a, right out of the blocks I'm wondering why grid row heights aren't auto-adjusting to fully display wrapped sentences contained in cells - i.e. only the first line displays and to view additional lines I need to select the cell within the row, and then when I move the cursor elsewhere the row/cell collapses again to only display the first line of text - am I missing a setting somewhere???  thanks, Doug
