copy / paste & drag / drop still a matter of delicacy > not really a bug but needs work IMHO

Submitted by jan_rifkinson on 2010/08/26 19:19
IMO
copy / paste dialog is now beautiful, clean, clear, understandable
however
user has to know to put cursor on item # column to copy correctly
and
in # column OR item column to paste correctly

IMO
inter-grid, i.e. drag / drop item from under TLI-A > TLI-B works well (arrow graphic is clear, etc)
however
1) user has to know to put cursor on dot before item to drag item & it seems like a very small target
2) if user has to drag item past limit of pane, automatic scroll up / down is tricky to hit.  It feels like line is 1 or 2 px high which is too narrow to be user friendly

OLE linking and embedding

Submitted by gregory on 2010/08/26 00:02
Here's a very basic question to which I can't find an answer.

Clearly the philosophy behind IQ is that IQ does what it is good at, but recognises that managing information always involves a range of tools. Thus IQ can be viewed as a very good way to manage "small" information things (items) and their inter-relationships. But it doesn't for example attempt to replace the filing system. Instead, you can "drop" file references into IQ and link back to them. And that's great, as far as it goes. It means that you have a link to information which is entirely managed by another application.

Sometimes it would be nice if IQ interworked more hand-in-hand with other apps. Thus for example I would love to see two-way mapping between outlines in IQ and outlines in Microsoft Project, Word and PowerPoint. It would vastly help towards Jan's dream of true IQ support for writers, for example.

Show links in item name in search dialog by default

Submitted by Jibz on 2010/08/25 13:57
I noticed this while searching for some items today which all started with a long hyperlink.

Instead of the blue underlined link the search dialog shows the html code for the link by default with a slightly strange result:

Once you click the items the html turns into the hyperlink and you can read them.

program freeze when adding first item of the day > a daily occurrence

Submitted by jan_rifkinson on 2010/08/25 10:05
v9.25_pre_30
Windows 7 machine

I start my day by opening IQ
The last / first grid that opens is my daily log (different from IQ journal)
I've attached a capture of this grid
I add today's date in "journal date" column
I move to Item column & add the day of the week
<CTRL><ENTER> to enter first sub-items of my day
program freeze
close / re-open program
proceed as normal for the rest of the day

This is now happening on a daily basis
It started a few days ago

URp/OML/OPML import

Submitted by reesd on 2010/08/24 15:58
Hi Pierre,
(and perhaps Jan since you seem to be using URp import a lot)

I’m trying to figure where we are with import so I can create a mapping for Bonsai and maybe some other XML formats (e.g. FreeMind). I’ve been digging through the threads and playing with imports for a while, would like to get the results summed up and in the doc.

Can you please confirm what should be working for OPML/OML/URp importing? If you do I can update the doc if you like.

Here is my guess based on the threads:

What is working
  • Item hierarchy
  • Item text
  • Embedded RTF text (as IQ HTML)
  • Text and Number attributes - Attribute name must match IQ field name (this means URL works automatically)

HTML pane causes app crash

Submitted by Mike3003 on 2010/08/24 04:29
Hi all,

I have an issue on some computers where as soon as I try to enter text in the HTML Pane the application (IQ Portable) crashes.  Yet works fine on other computers.  Any idea what could be causing this and if there is something I can change to get it working on all computers?

The error log shows:

F2 to open drop down menu

Submitted by jan_rifkinson on 2010/08/22 13:33
Pierre, I think it's terrific that you have consolidated how the user opens drop down menus or calendars,i.e. all via F2.

However, here's my thought on that.

<F2> is commonly used for editing command for IQ & other programs. And, in fact, that is its use in the grid.
Now it is given another use

On the one hand, it's good because the user doesn't have to consider another command (easier). OTOH, it may be a bit confusing.

Which leads me to asking: do you (or anybody) think <ENTER> might be a more natural alternative?
