Long-term development concerns

Submitted by WayneK on 2015/10/15 18:30
I know there have been discussions in the past about the development path for InfoQube.  I'm not nearly as informed as many of the long-term users here but I hope I'm not out of line in raising an issue about development.

InfoQube seems to be evolving at a rapid pace right now and I love the new features being added (especially the upcoming multi-pick fields).  I'm no programmer, but I believe that the introduction of new bugs is an inevitable part of adding features.  My concern is that something might happen to stop development (God forbid) and we would be left with a wonderful program which, unfortunately, is hampered by unresolved bugs.

Has there been any discussion about this contingency?  Is there someone in place who could step in and clean up existing bugs if Pierre isn't available?  Has there been any discussion of taking "operational pauses" every so often where development stops tem

Grid has started inserting a tab space when I paste text

Submitted by WayneK on 2015/10/15 17:28
This behavior just started out of the blue earlier in the day and I don't think I changed any settings that would bring it about.

I frequently copy/paste text from one cell to another in the "item" column (many of my cells here have identical test).  I often do 20 or more at a time.  When I paste the text, it is now inserting a tab space at the beginning of the text.  I have to go back and manually delete this space in each cell.

If I delete the space, then copy that cell, and paste it in another, it again inserts an extra space.

This only happens in the item column.  Other columns are fine.

Update: I did find a way to get it to work:  if I enter edit mode and manually select the text before copying, then the paste works correctly.  But the other method (right click the cell>copy>paste) is faster and always worked before.

Suggestions for improving colors

Submitted by WayneK on 2015/10/14 21:17
I use fill color quite a bit for organizing information.  Unfortunately, I'm having difficulty making good use of the colors available in InfoQube.  I find the ones on the first color dialogue to be too intense.  I prefer subtle, pastel colors for highlighting.  Some of the ones on the second page are ok but it takes two steps to get to them and there isn't much variety for the subtle ones.

Custom colors don't appear to be useful because there's no way to save them.  The ideal for me would be the ability to create a palette of custom colors that pop up on the first color dialogue.

I suspect there's a way to accomplish want I want using some combination of coding and/or conditional formatting.

[FIXED] Images in notes pane won't co-exist with text.

Submitted by WayneK on 2015/10/14 15:00
I pasted an image in the notes pane.  Later I came back to add notes below the image but it wouldn't let me.  Could not get the cursor to show up anywhere in the notes pane.

I started over with a new notes pane.  This time i entered some text first, then pasted the image above it.  Then I came back to paste some copied text below the image.  I selected a spot below the image.  Even though the cursor didn't show up, I hit "paste" anyway.  After a long delay, the text showed up but it was above the image, not below it.  And the text was locked up.  Once again, I can't get an active cursor anywhere in the notes pane.

I know we went through image issues in the note pane before.  Is there some problem with using copy/paste for images?

Follow up: it's worse than that.  My notes pane is locking up with just text in it.  I can't get an acti

How do I add a new line to a text cell?

Submitted by WayneK on 2015/10/14 14:40
I'm trying to figure out how to force a carriage return in a text column.  I want to create a list of items on separate lines.  If I hit "return" to go to the next line, it takes me to the next cell.  Ctrl-ret and Alt-ret don't work either.  Is there any way to do this without relying on world wrap (which doesn't work for what I'm trying to do).

Minor Word Wrap Issue

Submitted by WayneK on 2015/10/14 09:16
This is a small issue but noticeable (to me).  Word wrap doesn't quite work correctly in cells.  The text should be broken (wrapped) only at spaces between
words.  Instead, it routinely breaks between words and punctuation where there is no space.  Examples of incorrect breaks:

I'm interested in buying Jim
's car.

This is the first sentence
.  This is the second sentence.

It does the same thing to parentheses (
even though there's no space between the word and the punctuation).

Coming up in v0.9.26PreRel59...

Submitted by Pierre_Admin on 2015/10/13 22:47
Hi IQ Users !

Coming up in the next release (v0.9.26PreRel59):
  • New: WikiTag field now has a multi-select editor. Similar to the one in the New Item dialog. To enable it, simply set its editor to Auto-list of values. This will be generalized to other fields in the next version
  • New: Grid: Grid Filter (Ctrl+G): New Filter dialog. Adds supports for keywords (All or Any) and wildcards

Using the Omnibox

The Omnibox is a small textbox normally located on the main menu bar:

It can be used to:
  1. Search your IQBase
  2. Open Views (i.e. Grids, Calendar, etc)
  3. View Favorite items
  4. Execute Commands
To activate the Omnibox you can either:
  • Click in the text box, or
  • Hit the Omnibox shortcut key (normally Ctrl + F)
As soon as the Omnibox is activated, you can start typing. As typing is done, the Omnibox dropdown portion will updated:

Filters vs Columns

Submitted by WayneK on 2015/10/13 15:10
This is a follow up to my previous post about using search filters.  I'd like advice on how to organize a research project.

I'm entering the original research material in a text column, accompanied by additional columns for bibliographic info etc.  A key part of the research is being able to sort the text by different subject categories.
