Date Everything

Submitted by WayneK on 2019/08/04 18:07
This is a FWIW organization tip based on more than a few years of experience.  It was prompted by a current thread about assigning creation dates to items, which InfoQube does automatically.

This is a feature that seems simple but is very useful.  It's just one of the many reasons it pays to migrate from Ecco Pro to InfoQube.  You can auto-assign dates in Ecco Pro but doing so will eventually cause problems with its resource limitations.

I'd suggest expanding auto date assignment to everything you do.  If you create a list, write a memo, draw a sketch,...put the date at the top.  When you later are revisiting your work and trying to figure out what's what, having the created date available is very helpful in figuring out how it fits into the scheme of things (eg is this the latest sketch of my design, or an obsolete one?).

I read this suggestion many years ago and have applied

how to auto-assign value to property upon item creation

Submitted by vicen95650 on 2019/08/04 14:24
I am a long-time eccopro user who is trying to move to InfoQube. I was able to import items (with their columns) successfully from eccopro. Eccopro's auto-assignment rules were of course not migrated. Now I want to create a rule that will populate an item property (field/column/whatever) with some value whenever I create the item.

I believe I need to create an auto-assignment rule or a row equation but I cannot seem to get the syntax correctly. Would someone care to show me the explicit syntax for this case:
the field or property is named "creationDate" and is of type date.
the value that I want to assign to this property is today's date.
I want to assign the value upon item creation.

Thanks,

Double-click Edit

Submitted by WayneK on 2019/08/01 17:49
Just updated to 113f and found that double-clicking an item no longer enters edit mode but instead expands/collapses the outline.

Is there any way to get this back?  Can't find anything in options or shortcuts.  Not opposed in principle to switching to another method to enter editing but breaking a five-year habit may not be easy.

Lost Tabs Heads Up

Submitted by WayneK on 2019/08/01 16:26
I had to close the five InfoQube files I had running so I could reboot.  Thought I'd do it the easy way this time by using the taskbar to right-click>close the files.

When you do it this way, your tabs are lost.  I had 20-30 tabs open in each file, and every file reloaded with no tabs visible.

So lesson learned: when you have to close out InfoQube, use File>Exit.

line breaks in cell text

Submitted by jimspoon on 2019/07/27 00:43
Is there any delimit text from an outside source, so that, when pasted into Infoqube - one delimiter results in a line break in cell text, and another delimiter results in a new item?

Also, I am noticing that when Shift+Enter is used to make a line break in cell text, that line break appears only when the text is viewed in Edit Mode.  When the cell is not in Edit Mode, the text appears all run together as if there was no line break.

fixed in 0.9.113g - 'Single click starts edit' option (1.2.25) does not stick between IQ restarts

I can select 'Never' temporarily but on restart it always goes back to 'Selected Cell Text'.

Thanks

PS: Sorry about many posts today, I've just had a lot of time to fool around with settings etc.

Option to disable drag to select multiple items (to speed up dragging items up / down in the grid / to other grids)

Submitted by LeftEccoForIQ on 2019/07/24 12:01
When I want to drag items around, I often end up not waiting long enough after pressing the mouse button down before moving the mouse. Result: select multiple items rather than the intended drag, which then has to be corrected by re-selecting the item I want to drag and repeating the drag procedure correctly.

For my part, I'd be happy with Shift-click to select multiples or using the keyboard to do it.

'Add marked items as children' and item order in grid

Submitted by LeftEccoForIQ on 2019/07/24 09:46
When I add a marked item as a child and then immediately use Alt-Left to promote it to the level above (i.e. to make them siblings of the parent at this point in the grid), the marked item will often jump one slot further down in the grid (i.e. below the next item rather than the parent). If I do this with multiple items selected, the first item will appear below the next item, the second item will appear below the item below the next and so on.

To be able to use this method as a quicker replacement for drag and drop operations in / between grids, I would like to suggest additonal options:

- move marked items here as siblings (move to below this item in this grid)
- (and possibly:) move marked items here as children

Cheers
